The course was a finalist for the VDMA prize for "Best Machine Hall 2015", a programme for success rates in Mechanical Engineering awarded by the VDMA (German Engineering Association). Various measures are in place that enable students improve their skills in key subjects like mathematics immediately before they start their course and during the course. The degree course has an online learning platform ("Mathe-Camp") set up for this purpose and organises the "Nacht der Mathematik" event to prepare for the maths exams - with the help of professors.

Long-standing partnerships are in place with many international universities. Master's students have the opportunity to do do some of their degree at the University of Glamorgan (Wales) and gain a double degree. Students who wish to do their practical semester abroad have access to the contacts of the degree programme and receive extensive support from the department's international adviser.

The degree programme provides access to laboratories for all sub-disciplines of mechanical engineering. The technical equipment includes a virtual reality laboratory, a mechatronics laboratory, a hydro pulser, all common processing machines, surface analysis and a laboratory for lightweight construction and fibre-reinforced plastics. In addition, students of the course run a 3D printing laboratory where fellow students can create their own CAD designs and implement them.

The department is involved in many entrepreneurship events (e.g. "Elevator Pitch", which awards prizes to particularly innovative start-up ideas, or "Startup Nights") to offer young entrepreneurs a platform for their start-up ideas and feedback from experts. The department works closely with the Tailfingen technology workshop, which offers young company founders rooms, infrastructure and a network for their start-up ideas. An experienced start-up manager supports company founders in implementing their ideas and provides valuable contacts.

The programme offers a personal atmosphere and direct contact between students and teaching staff. The Career Center supports the transition from university to the job market with a wide range of needs-based further training services for students. Students can also take part in many excursions, company visits and trade fair visits on top of their regular classes.
