Students are assigned to one of the key areas before commencing the course. The course is completed after passing the Laufbahnprüfung II (career track examination), consisting of an oral and written component. Graduates then start their service in the police force with the rank Polizeikommissar (-in) (police inspector) or Kriminalkommissar(-in) (detective superintendent).

Training within the administration. No direct application at the higher education institution. Candidate inspectors study in the applied sciences section of the Hamburg Police Academy Students can either be civil servants being promoted with experience in the Law Enforcement Service from career track section I or be direct entrants who receive civil servant status upon matriculation.
