About us

The HSII - Hamburg School of Infection & Immunity - was founded at the beginning of 2022. We are part of the Academy of Biomedical Health and Sciences (ABHS) at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in Hamburg, Germany. Our goal is to support the graduate education at UKE, especially of PhD students, in the fields of infection, immunity and inflammation and bring together the brightest minds of young medical and natural scientists curious to learn about the fascinating complexity of immune surveillance, its challenges by infectious agents, and the plasticity of its adaptive and regulatory responses in health and autoimmunity. 

Our Program

The HSII offers a three-year curriculum for PhD theses, starting each year in October. The training is supported by a broad range of collaborative research programs including CRC1192, CRC1328, FOR2799, FOR2879, and FOR5068, which set the specific research focus on infection, immunity and inflammation for the participating scientists. Moreover, the immunological part of graduate training at HSII is closely aligned with the research objectives of the Hamburg Center for Translational Immunology (HCTI). At the HCTI, scientists and clinicians work interdisciplinary on autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases. 

• International working groups offer research projects and funding for at least three years
• 180 credit points, of which 150 credit points are for the dissertation and 30 credit points are for accompanying courses (based on the European Credit Transfer System ECTS)
• Courses in Good Scientific Practice, Presentation and Writing Skills provided by UKE’s Academy of Biomedical Health Sciences (ABHS)
• Specific courses on Key Skills, Interdisciplinary Topics, and Research Methods
• Weekly seminars and journal clubs
• Retreats, guest lectures, symposia, and social activities
• The teaching language is English.

Requirements

• Above-average MSc degree in biological sciences or equivalent (e.g., bioinformatics)
• Proof of English language proficiency, e.g., a TOEFL or IELTS test, except if English is the native language or at least two years of education (during B.Sc./M.Sc. or equivalent studies) have been conducted entirely in English
• High level of interest in the areas of infection, immunity and inflammation
• Ability to work in a team and enthusiasm for the interdisciplinary work of the Graduate School
• Certificate of full immunization against measles.
