Description/content

Representing the European Past: Memory and Place-Making in Cross-Cultural Communities

This programme delves into the political processes entailed in remembering and forgetting, introduces students to the commemorative landscape of the EU and explores possible solutions to the challenges facing European collective memory or what could be called Europe's culture of remembrance. Sessions will deal with what makes us remember some things while other facets of our lives and historical events are suppressed or hard to recollect. How does what we remember (and what we [choose to] forget) structure the reality that we live in - symbolically, physically, and politically? How is the past used (or abused) to serve the present needs of individuals and collectives in Europe today, where different concepts of identity often times clash with the reality of cosmopolitan communities that are both ethnically and culturally diverse?

In addition to the academic programme, we offer all participants German language classes (for beginners [A1] and students who already possess some German skills [A1-A2]), an intercultural workshop that prepares participants for the very diverse setting in which all classes take place, a buddy programme that matches each participant with local students who offer support throughout each school (and before), and a rich and varied social programme that offers many opportunities to experience arts, culture, and local student life in one of Germany’s most historical university towns.

Innovative. Interdisciplinary. International. Since 1477.

These have been the University of Tübingen’s guiding principles in research and teaching ever since it was founded. With this long tradition, the University of Tübingen is one of the most respected universities in Germany. Recently, its institutional strategy was once again successfully selected for funding in the Excellence Initiative sponsored by the German federal and state governments, making Tübingen one of Germany’s eleven universities distinguished with that title of excellence. Tübingen has also proven its status as a leading research university in many national and international competitions. In key rankings, Tübingen is listed among the best universities for the Humanities and Social Sciences as well as for Science and Medicine.

With its broad spectrum of subjects, the University of Tübingen provides a wealth of opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. And such cooperation extends beyond the university and around the world. The University of Tübingen has joint research projects at all levels with other institutions of higher education, with research institutes, and with industry.

The university’s excellence in research offers students optimal study conditions, online or in person, combined with the opportunity to emphasise individual interests along the way. The attractive study environment is reinforced by many additional services, such as the language centre, interdisciplinary lectures in the "Studium Generale", and the state-of-the-art university library.

The university motto speaks for itself: "attempto – I dare!"

Tübingen is a very lively university town with 85,000 inhabitants, 29,000 of them students. The picturesque town centre features charming narrow streets and small houses from the Middle Ages. Its historic charm and attractive position on the Neckar River offer a high quality of life whether your are studying, working, or taking a break. Being so close to nature and surrounded by forests and hills makes Tübingen very special.

Located in the heart of Europe

Located in Baden-Württemberg, a southern German region with strong European traditions, Tübingen is equally close to both Strasbourg (France), the seat of the European Parliament, and Frankfurt, the seat of the European Central Bank. The nearby Stuttgart airport serves most international destinations, putting Tübingen just a few hours away from European cities like Paris, London, or Prague.

Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg, can be reached in only 30 minutes by train. With over five million inhabitants, the Stuttgart metropolitan region is one of the biggest in Germany. Stuttgart lies in a valley, and it only takes an hour to reach the Black Forest. Home to companies such as Bosch, Daimler, and Porsche, it has been a centre of technological innovation for over a century. Stuttgart has very good train connections, putting it just a few hours away from Munich, Berlin, and Hamburg.
