Why Data Science?

In today’s digital world, data is plentiful; the last decade has shown machine learning methods to be spectacularly effective in discovering useful and meaningful underlying patterns in this overabundance of data. Spurred by this development, there is a growing quest for new and refined algorithms, deeper fundamental understanding of methods and their limitations, and expanding fields of application. Data Science is your field of study if you are...

  • strong in mathematics and analytical thinking,
  • not afraid of computers and programming,
  • and open to applications in technology, business, or social and natural sciences.

Goals of the Programme

As a graduate of the Bachelor's programme in Data Science at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (KU), you will master cutting-edge machine learning algorithms and software tools. At the same time, you will have gained broad mathematical and statistical insight to make sense of massive data sets, evaluate results, and develop new approaches and algorithms.

Specialisation areas

You can choose between six specialisation areas linked to active areas of research at the KU:

  • Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computing
  • Machine Learning and Statistics
  • Environmental Science
  • Business Analytics and Operations
  • Finance and Economics
  • Digital Transformation of Society

Career opportunities

The rapid rise of data-driven analysis and decision making has created huge demand for qualified specialists in business and industry, as well as for researchers capable of leveraging and refining data-driven approaches across the entire spectrum of academic disciplines.

As a graduate of the Data Science programme, you will be well prepared to work in analytic and strategic positions in the technology sector, in start-ups, or in public, non-profit, and non-governmental organisations. Just as easily, you may choose to continue your education at Master's or doctoral level at the KU or at a graduate school in the mathematical sciences or technology world-wide.

As courses are taught in English, graduates will find excellent opportunities in the increasingly international Data Science job market.

Course organisation

Data Science is an interdisciplinary field of study. Thus, the Data Science programme at the KU provides a well-balanced selection of modules from

  • Mathematics
  • Statistics
  • Computer Science
  • Programming and Software Engineering
  • A field of application of Data Science ("specialisation area")
  • Ethics and transdisciplinary study

Teaching methods comprise established and modern techniques. These include lectures with integrated practical exercises, and working in small groups on projects that utilise real-world data sets.

  • Integrated study abroad unit(s)
Integrated study abroad unit(s)

Students have the option of studying a semester abroad, preferably in the fifth semester.

Here, students benefit from the KU's worldwide network of more than 260 partner universities around the globe. Whether North America, Asia, Australia, South America or Europe, you will find many options! KU's International Office provides support with planning and organisation. Students can also organise study stays abroad on their own.

More information, also on funding and scholarships, is available on the website of the International Office. It offers advice on internships abroad, too.

Integrated internships

An industrial internship or a research internship is mandatory. The programme maintains partnerships with local industry as well as academic researchers at the KU and neighbouring universities and institutes.

Additional support is provided by KU's Career Center.

Funding opportunities within the university
Yes
Description of the above-mentioned funding opportunities within the university

The KU offers academically qualified international students in financial need a scholarship (450 EUR per month) funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts through the "Förderung der Internationalisierung" programme. Scholarships are awarded for a period of five months. There is no automatic extension but it is possible to reapply.

Please find more information on financial issues, scholarships and prerequisites on our website.

Academic admission requirements

Recognised university entrance qualification

Detailed information can be found at:

Language requirements

English language skills at level B2 are strongly recommended.

By the end of the second semester of the programme, all students have to prove knowledge of German at beginner level A2; registration is conditional until then. KU assists in finding German courses that fit the student's needs.

Language levels refer to CEFR standards.

Possibility of finding part-time employment

It is possible to find a job as a student assistant ("Hiwi") by contacting professors and university departments directly. Information on current job vacancies can also be found on the website of each chair.

There are also different offers for temporary part-time jobs outside the university, for example, in restaurants or in shopping malls. Eichstätt and Ingolstadt are the cities with the lowest unemployment rates in Germany.

Accommodation

The International Office at the KU offers a housing service. It helps international students find accommodation, and it facilitates the contact between students and the future landlord or landlady. This service is free of charge. However, a housing service deposit is charged, and this will be refunded at the end of your rental contract. Please find more information on housing at the KU here.

Studying at KU is more than just acquiring specialist knowledge. We broaden our horizons together and take responsibility in and beyond the individual degree programmes. KU has a particular focus on topics such as personal development, sustainability, social skills and social commitment.

KU was ranked "Most Popular University in Germany" in 2021 and 2022 by the online platform StudyCHECK.de, one of the most prominent information sites for studying in Germany. This award confirms the ideal study conditions at the KU. Our 5,000 students are able to work and learn in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. They benefit from personal supervision, interdisciplinary study offers, excellent facilities, a well-stocked library, a broad range of sports and leisure activities, comprehensive support from the KU International Office, and a large global network with over 260 partner universities.

The Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (KU) is the only Catholic university in the German-speaking world. It is fully accredited, meaning that the degrees and qualifications it awards are equivalent to those issued by German state universities. The KU is committed to its cosmopolitan character and warmly welcomes students of all denominations and faiths, as well as students of no religious belief.

University location

The Bachelor's programme in Data Science is centred at the Mathematical Institute for Machine Learning and Data Science (MIDS), located in the historic buildings of the first Bavarian university which was founded in 1472, moved to Landshut in 1800 and has been located in Munich since 1826 as Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität. Ingolstadt's history as a university town continued 188 years later: In 1989, the KU Faculty of Economics opened in Ingolstadt. Now, in 2023, the foundation of the MIDS marks the return of university life to the historic city centre.

Ingolstadt, with about 135,000 inhabitants, is the dynamic centre of a culturally and economically growing region. It is one of the cities with the youngest, most diverse, and fastest growing population in Germany. The theatre, the AUDI summer concerts, the jazz days and the Museum of Concrete Art are just a few of the cultural highlights. In a historical setting, a large number of restaurants, clubs and pubs invite you to unwind after lectures and seminars often just a few steps away from campus. The day can also be spent relaxing on the Danube beach or at the lake. And of course, as in any Upper Bavarian city: enjoy the local beer gardens for a "Brezel" and a beer or two. And if you yearn for something more cosmopolitan, the centre of Munich is only a 40-minute train ride away.
