The primary goal of the Physics Master’s programme at LMU is to impart expertise in current research topics on the basis of a deeper physical understanding. Students will be trained on research methods, strategic planning and critical evaluation of scientific results. The ability to think physically and to proceed methodically in both theory and practice are developed during the two-year course of study. The programme includes lectures, exercises, seminars, lab courses and research. Building on the knowledge gained in the first two semesters, these abilities will be strengthened during the one-year research phase in the framework of the Master's thesis.

Depending on the elected courses, an additional certificate in the following specialisations can be obtained: Biophysics, Medical Physics, Astrophysics, Atmospheric Physics or Artificial Intelligence in Physics.

The curriculum for the MSc Physics comprises four semesters. In the first and second semesters, students take compulsory courses in advanced experimental and theoretical physics as well as elective courses from the various research areas of the faculty. The one-year Master's project (research phase and Master's thesis) takes place in the third and fourth semesters.
If desired, a part of the curriculum can be studied at one of LMU's numerous partner universities abroad. Further information can be found here.

The application for the MSc Physics requires a first professional university degree or an equivalent degree from Germany or abroad in one of the following subject areas: physics, astrophysics or meteorology, or in another mathematical-scientific subject area.

In addition, applicants without a German university entrance qualification must apply at the LMU International Office for admission to the university.
