Description/content

The Transatlantic Master's Programme (TAM) trains graduate students pursuing international careers in administration, diplomacy, business, policy-making, consulting, teaching, and research. Offered by way of partnerships between world-renowned universities in the United States and Europe, TAM is a unique and intensive degree programme. TAM students pursue graduate study on both sides of the Atlantic while earning a Master's degree.
In the face of accelerated European integration and intensification of US–EU relations, it has become imperative that students wishing to enter into international careers understand the institutional history and social, political, cultural, and economic practices of nations that comprise this growing international community. TAM prepares students to assume positions of leadership in world affairs by providing them with a broad comparative understanding of EU–US politics, policy, and social evolution, complemented by expertise in a particular nation or topic.
To meet the demands of students wishing to pursue various career goals in the expanding transatlantic arena, the TAM programme offers two different tracks as well as various degree options. Students can choose to receive a Master's degree from the University of North Carolina (UNC), or they may opt for a degree granted by one of the European universities.

The TAM programme awards a limited number of tuition remissions to reduce the programme fee. If you wish to be considered for a merit-based TAM scholarship, please include a brief statement to that effect in your application. In addition, three to four full FLAS scholarships (one full academic year’s tuition plus a stipend of 15,000 USD) will usually be awarded to incoming TAM students.

Academic admission requirements

Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university, or an international equivalent, preferably in a relevant subject area (political science, history, international relations, European studies, American studies, economics or modern languages).

Language requirements

All students are expected to be proficient in English and at least one other language. Students whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency with the TOEFL (79 points with a minimum of 50 points in each section) or IELTS exam (7).

Students who wish to undertake coursework in a language other than English must demonstrate ability in one of the other consortium languages, first through a language evaluation to be conducted by a university or college faculty member and submitted with the application. Language skills will be screened again in an interview at the beginning of the autumn semester at the University of North Carolina.

At Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, it is possible to study in German (TAM—German track) as well as in English (TAM—English track). Students will have the largest range of options if they can study in both languages. Half of the compulsory classes are taught in English, and the other half are offered in German.

As one of eleven German universities, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin was chosen "University of Excellence" in June 2012. It was successful in all three funding lines in the third round of the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments and awarded for its future concept "Educating Enquiring Minds: Individuality - Openness - Guidance". In an international comparison, Humboldt-Universität ranks among the top ten of German universities. Scientists here research socially relevant topics and challenges of the future and communicate these with the public. Humboldt-Universität invests all its energy in being a place of excellent research and teaching. Its aim is to promote young talents and to positively influence society and economy outside the university framework.
Every year, over 5,000 young people decide to embark on their studies at Humboldt-Universität in the heart of Berlin. There is hardly any other place where they can choose from the same variety of degree courses - among them, some international Master's programmes with lectures and seminars held in English.
For a first-rate university, international exchange in research and study is a matter of course. Humboldt-Universität has academic partnerships with more than 400 Erasmus partners in Europe, with over 150 university partners worldwide, with partners in two Erasmus Mundus programmes and four Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Windows Programmes with over 1,500 mobile students.
Every year, about 800 academics from abroad spend time at Berlin's oldest university. Additionally, researchers from Humboldt-Universität are welcomed at many different international universities where they conduct projects or field studies and teach as guest lecturers. Humboldt-Universität helps students with the preparation of their study time abroad and provides consultation to international students and academics on all questions relating to their stay in Berlin. Through the creation of international networks, intercultural research and teaching are thus being furthered.

Humboldt-Universität's long-standing main partner in the Transatlantic Master's Programme is the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
