A new initiative to strengthen academic cooperation between India and Germany

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) intensifies its cooperation with India. DAAD and University Grants Commission (UGC) to launch “Indo-German Partnership in Higher Education Programme (IGP)” on 6th October 2015.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and University Grants Commission (UGC) are all set to intensify their cooperation. During the recently concluded third Indo-German Intergovernmental Consultations, DAAD Vice President Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee und UGC Chairman Dr. Ved Prakash signed an MoU to this effect. The “Indo-German Partnership in Higher Education Programme“ will witness India and Germany investing 3.5 million Euro each over a period of four years four years from 2016-2020 to encourage and support cooperation between higher education institutions in each country. The signing took place at the Hyderabad House New Delhi in the presence of German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel and Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

“German universities see India as an important partner. The new programme aims at further strengthening the existing academic collaborations and creating possibilities for cooperation that goes beyond the conventional,” said Prof. Dr. Wintermantel, President, DAAD. The IGP will fund a number of projects, which involve both faculty and students in India and Germany.

The number of Indian students in Germany has almost doubled to 11860 in the past four years. With this, Indians form the 2nd largest group of international students enrolled in Masters and PhD programmes at German universities. “Besides highlighting the attractiveness of Germany, these numbers also stand testimony to the excellent quality education imparted at Indian universities,” remarked Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee, Vice President, DAAD.
