Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Generalist Bachelor's and Master's degree programme with four advanced study areas; Soft skills in special modules; numerous theses are developed in close cooperation with external parties.; Organised initial study phase with orientation week; Tutorials in parallel throughout studies; Publisher of the design and calculation tables, Prof. Holschemacher and other authors of the book about calculation tables teach at the faculty; Continuing education of teaching staff through the academic centre; Transition from the Bachelor's to the Master's degree course is flexible and uncomplicated.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The Master's degree course is offered with four specialisations. Three of them are application-oriented and one is research-oriented. Master's theses are largely integrated into research projects at the faculty and are intended to teach students how to conduct academic work, also with a view to a possible doctorate. The course content corresponds to the latest scientific and technical developments. It is based on the principle of unity between research and teaching.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Percentage of first semester students in the faculty is 42%, mostly from Austria and Asian countries. Contacts to many partner universities. Double degree programme with Spain. Collaborative doctorates with universities abroad. Some lecturers have worked abroad for relatively long periods (including a multiple Fulbright scholarship holder). Participation in many international conferences. International research projects. Vibrant Erasmus partnerships. Mentoring programme for foreign students. Compulsory elective modules in English.

Special features regarding the equipment

Approx. 3,000 m² of laboratory space with environmental scanning electron microscope (value of approx. €250,000), image processing system with several microscopes and cameras, mercury intrusion porosimeter, CDF system for determining the freeze-thaw resistance, servo-hydraulic testing system with several control circuits and actuators up to 1 MN max. test force, electromechanical test machine with 600 kN max. test force, hydraulic test machine with 6,000 kN max. test force, sample height >4 m, servo-hydraulic building materials test machine with 5000 kN max. test force, photogrammetic industry measurement system.

Special features regarding research and development

The faculty is proud of its research strength. In 2023, it raised around EUR 3.8 million in third-party funding from public and private donors. Collaborative doctoral programmes have a long tradition in the faculty. Research focuses on hydraulic engineering and community water management, geoengineering, concrete construction and sustainable building materials, experimental mechanics and structural dynamics.

Other special features

The HTWK Leipzig does not consider itself a typical University of Applied Sciences. This is the result of its past as a university institution. In addition to teaching, the focus of the faculty is research and internationalisation. The technical equipment available in teaching and research is "very good" for a University of Applied Sciences (initial equipment approx. EUR 900,000). The university's focus is Engineering. In addition, the faculty can score with the location advantage "Leipzig" and a tradition of more than 260 years.
