Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The architecture training focuses on research-oriented design and project studies – real design tasks as well as interdisciplinary experiments form the basic foundation here. Architecture is a complex relational structure between understanding history and theory construction, design, project and reflection, experimentation and academic work, as well as craftsmanship and the use of digital tools. A close link between Architecture and Town Planning also ensures a holistic approach towards the built and designed environment.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The faculty's Institute of European Urban Studies offers an international Master's degree programme taught in English. The Bauhaus.Institute for Experimental Architecture supervises a teaching and research cooperation with the Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, as well as the English-language degree programme in Integrated Urban Development and Design. The faculty has 152 exchange opportunities for students in 42 countries. BIPs are offered on a regular basis, excursions abroad are often possible.

Special features regarding the equipment

Faculty's own computer cluster with approx. 25 workstations; Water jet cutter, laser cutter in the workshop

Special features regarding research activities

The Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism is a university research institution where new methods, theories and technologies of architecture and town planning are studied and tested. The research spectrum ranges from urbanism and applied architecture research, theory and history research, through to ecology, energy and climate research. Research groups, our own institutes, and renowned expert symposia and conferences provide the framework for the research activities which have a predominantly international, interdisciplinary and cross-institutional focus.

Other special features

The Bauhaus founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar was primarily a school and its aim was no less than to design the living conditions of the modern world in an innovative school experiment. The Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism faces up to this challenge with current issues that arise from the global, demographic, climatic and socio-economic change processes. An international team of teaching staff and researchers supports an increasingly international student body along the way to professional and academic careers.
