Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

In Bochum, Arabic Studies and Islamic Studies are studied in combination with a freely selectable second subject and thus allow specialisation in both subjects in terms of methodology and content. An optional component (30 CP) offers the opportunity for interdisciplinary and linguistic continuing education as well as for career-focused work placements in Germany and abroad. Our teaching is closely linked with ongoing research projects. Exchange programme with universities in Arab countries, Israel and Turkey enable international studies.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

In Bochum, Arabic Studies and Islamic Studies are studied as one subject or in combination with a freely selectable second subject and thus allow specialisation in both subjects in terms of methodology and content. In the one-subject Master's degree, an optional component (16 CP) offers the opportunity for interdisciplinary and linguistic continuing education as well as for career-focused work placements in Germany and abroad. Our teaching is closely linked with ongoing research projects. Exchange programme with universities in Arab countries, Israel and Turkey enable international studies.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Studying in Bochum also offers a very international experience. A semester abroad in Arabic Studies and Islamic Studies is not compulsory, but highly recommended. Semesters abroad are possible throughout Europe via Erasmus. Exchange programmes are also available with universities in Arab countries such as Oman, Israel, Palestine and Turkey. Our International Office offers valuable support and advice for our students.

Special features regarding research activities

The Institute of Arabic Studies and Islamic Studies is distinguished by its research strength in three major areas: The specialisation in Arabic Studies explores in particular the history of the sciences in the Arab tradition of the Middle Ages. The field of Islamic studies focuses on the modern age and modernity. The focus is on the Muslim societies of West Asia and North Africa with their history, diverse cultures and political structures. Turkish Studies explores Ottoman-Turkish and modern Turkish literature and culture.
