Further information provided by the department

Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The BA enables easy access to the degree course without prior knowledge of Latin or Greek and offers basic language training in which students are successively introduced to translation techniques and original reading under intensive supervision. The extensive "Latin Intensive" e-learning programme supports language training with digital independent learning components. The comparative approach gives students a holistic understanding of antiquity.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The courses of the consecutive MA degree programmes are interlinked with the research of the teaching staff, so that students gain an early insight into current research topics and can develop their own initial research results on current academic discourses. Regular research colloquia also offer the opportunity for students to publicly present their own results and thereby practice academic exchange. Interdisciplinary cooperation within the department as well as an extensive alumni network enable interdisciplinary exchange.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The department supports students by providing intensive advice and supervision before, during and after stays abroad. Department excursions abroad, which often include an exchange with local universities, also offer the opportunity for students to gain their first impressions of study opportunities abroad and to establish contacts at international universities to prepare for a stay abroad. The recognition of courses taken abroad is straightforward and follows the "European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS)" and the "Lisbon Convention".

Special features regarding the equipment

The seminar rooms are equipped with projectors and PCs, as well as cameras and speakers that also enable hybrid teaching formats. In addition, access to central subject-specific databases is guaranteed by the university library.

Special features regarding research activities

In ongoing research projects of the department's chair holders, students are given the opportunity to participate in the scientific community at an early stage as research assistants or (after graduation) as doctoral students. Thematically, the research of the academic staff in the department covers all Greek and Latin literature from Homer to the early modern age. Special emphasis is currently placed on Cento poetry and metaphors of religion.

Other special features

The teaching staff in the department address current social issues such as diversity and sustainability in their courses and research and engage in a productive dialogue with Antiquities. This raises students' awareness of the continuing relevance of ancient literature and culture as well as their own social role and responsibility, regardless of their future careers in teaching, academia or the private sector.
