Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

As part of the polyvalent BA, the subject is taught historically and systematically in such a way that students are prepared for both teacher training and specialist studies. Basic knowledge of academic work and written and oral presentation are practised and consolidated. Students learn to familiarise themselves with complex topics and fields independently and to communicate these in a way that is both technically accurate and generally understandable. Students are thus also prepared for various professional fields outside the university.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The two MA degree programmes deepen this knowledge and encourage students to develop a profile and specialise according to their individual skills and interests. The two-subject MA serves to interlink the discipline of philosophy with other specialist sciences. The one-subject MA allows for a more distinct profile. Accordingly, it is primarily aimed at students who wish to pursue a doctorate.

Special features regarding the international orientation

In the Philosophy research and teaching unit, there are numerous research collaborations with international partners, such as the Philosophy Department at Rutgers University, or collaborations in joint projects funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the British Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). Teaching offers interdisciplinary Master's degree programmes that are attractive for international students. In workshops as part of research-based learning, students are introduced to contemporary research through exchanges with international philosophers. The Erasmus exchange is constantly being expanded.

Special features regarding the equipment

Philosophy students at RUB have access to all standard databases and open access publications as well as two of its own OA journals. We offer researchers, for example, a central research data repository with ReSeeD: https://researchdata.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/; We have a faculty laboratory that enables hybrid teaching at the cutting edge of digitalisation and have access to an e-assessment centre that enables barrier-free workshops and exams: https://zfw.rub.de/das-e-assessment-center-eac-der-zentrale-raum-fuer-elektronische-praesenzpruefungen-an-der-rub/

Special features regarding research activities

Digital Kant Centre NRW; ERC-2020-ADG – ERC ADVANCED GRANT: Contradictory Logics: A Radical Challenge to Logical Orthodoxy; AI-based support for rescue missions; Learning Analytics and AI in Higher Education; SecHuman – Security for People in Cyberspace; Academies Project: Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi; INTERACT! New Forms of Social Interaction with Intelligent Systems; The Interdependence of Episodic Memory and the Self-Model; Understanding Actions and Reasons; Experimental Philosophy and the Method of Cases; From Perception To Belief and Back Again

Other special features

Three professorships of Philosophy alone focus on the opportunities, possibilities and ethical aspects of AI and digitalisation. With a representative, Philosophy is actively involved in Ruhr University Bochum's certificates in Sustainability and Diversity as part of the optional programme. Philosophy staff in Bochum are involved in the organisations SW*IP (Society for Women* in Philosophy) and MAP (Minorities in Philosophy).
