Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Literary Studies in Bielefeld encourages a variety of approaches to literature. It explores the connections between different literatures, cultures and arts and sharpens the eye for differences and similarities. As a "science in the space between", it moves along the boundaries between languages and cultures. It also practises reflecting on and transcending these boundaries.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Sociological, educational and linguistic seminars and lectures are offered, as well as IT and practical media content. The Master's degree course "Int. Media Studies" thus combines interdisciplinary perspectives of the research topic "media". This opens up a wide range of options for an individual course of study. Due to the opportunity to develop a profile with different academic degrees (MA or MSc), students can receive a targeted education according to their interests and previous knowledge.

Special features regarding the international orientation

BA Literary Studies students have the opportunity to build on the department's existing research and teaching collaborations through international study visits to Argentina, Mexico, China, Italy, Poland or the USA, among other places. The opportunity to earn a German-Italian double degree in the MA Literary Studies in cooperation with Sapienza Università di Roma (Italy) is also worth mentioning.

Special features regarding the equipment

The Media Studies programme can draw on the spatial and technical equipment of the participating faculties, some of which are of a very high technical standard. In addition to the rooms of the faculties (and the central lecture theatres and seminar rooms of the university), the participating faculties and working groups have various rooms that, due to their specific equipment, are available and excellently suited for the courses in the Master's degree programme.

Special features regarding research activities

The Literary Studies degree courses build on the research focuses of the subject, such as: World literature, European-Jewish literatures, antiquity and Europe, translation, multilingualism, migration, aesthetic education, intermediality, literary theory, philological practices, reception and adaptation research. Within the faculty, there are intersections with gender studies, multilingualism research in the field of German as a foreign language, the digital humanities, music and art education and the Centre for InterAmerican Studies.

Other special features

The mission statement for the university's teaching includes the criterion of sustainability. Although this topic is not a central focus in the Master's in Interdisciplinary Media Science, it is implemented and addressed in various ways. For example, questions about data use, resource conservation and energy costs play a major role. This helps to raise awareness of how data is collected, used and processed in a sustainable manner. The promotion of diversity also takes place at various levels and is anchored in the mission statement.
