Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The faculty's BA degree programmes provide students with a broad range of subjects and offer extensive elective and specialisation opportunities in later semesters, while also providing very practical elements (for example, the BA in social sciences includes extensive coverage of methods).

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Some of the MA degree courses are single-subject specialisation courses that are specifically intended to improve research skills in the subject area. There are also more general, transdisciplinary degree courses (e.g. political science, sociology) that attract a broad range of students from the social sciences (including anthropology, ethnology, social work, etc.).

Special features regarding the international orientation

The department maintains its own international office, which supports students and researchers/lecturers in carrying out international study, teaching and research stays and, conversely, forms a point of contact for incoming students. Numerous lecturers participate in JLU's Virtual International Programme, in which mostly English-language courses are made available to the students of all partner universities of the JLU in digital or hybrid format. In addition, there are several country-specific international tandem teaching projects, some of which are funded by the DAAD.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

North-West University, Südafrika; University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinadad and Tobago; Universidad de Antioquia, Antioquia, Kolumbien; International Hellenic University, Thessaloniki, Griechenland; University of Toulouse - Jean Jaures, Toulouse, Frankreich; University of Cantabria, Santander, Spanien

Special features regarding the equipment

Overall, the technical equipment is state-of-the-art. All seminar rooms and lecture halls are equipped with multimedia technology and digital connectivity.

Special features regarding research activities

Faculty 03 is involved in interdisciplinary research projects that go beyond JLU, such as the "Migration and Human Rights" research group and the "Dynamics of Security" collaborative research centre (CRC). There are numerous ministry-funded projects (some of which extend beyond the Giessen site) in the field of social and educational sciences.

Other special features

The department is currently focusing on sustainability in the form of an international network project funded by the DAAD ("SDG Plus") as well as a professorship for social science sustainability research, which is currently occupied. The topic of diversity is promoted in research and teaching in a variety of ways, for example through research and teaching on inclusion/ableism, gender studies and racism.
