Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

With its two Bachelor's degree programmes, the Faculty of Materials Engineering offers two degree programmes that are among the largest and most renowned in the field of materials science in Germany. We attach great importance to practice- and application-oriented degree programmes in which you will also be introduced to applied research and development and have the opportunity to work on exciting research projects at an early stage in your studies! We offer training in all material groups, whereby you can specialise in the main study stage. The student-teacher ratio is excellent.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

In the Master's degree programme, you will have the opportunity to specialise in a material (metals, plastics, ceramics/glass) in the second semester after completing basic education in the first semester. You can also enrich your studies with voluntary practical components (participation in research projects), which are fully creditable. After successful completion of their Master's degree, the best graduates have the opportunity to obtain a doctorate in the Faculty of Materials Engineering, as faculty professors have had the right to confer doctoral degrees since 2023.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The faculty has a partner university in Toronto (Canada) and in Thailand.

Special features regarding the equipment

The Faculty of Materials Engineering has almost 50 laboratories and is excellently equipped with over 150 different devices for material analysis, production and processing. Among other things, the faculty has 2 scanning electron microscopes, several X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence systems, micro-computed tomography, equipment for the high-temperature characterisation of materials up to 3000°C (dilatometer, thermogravimetry, sintering furnaces, hot presses, etc.) as well as the usual equipment for material characterisation (tensile testing machines, hardness testing, rheometer, laser flash, DSC, etc.).

Special features regarding research and development

The professors of the Faculty of Materials Engineering are extremely active in research. The research fields include materials for fuel cells and the energy transition, biopolymers, light metals, medical technology, extremely heat-insulating wall building materials, 3D printing, material simulation and much more. Ceramic heating elements developed in the faculty represent essential system components of the Mars Rover in the ExoMars mission, which the faculty is particularly proud of. Each year, the professors of the faculty raise research funds in the range of around EUR 1 million.

Other special features

Sustainability plays a large role in teaching and research. Sustainability topics such as the substitution of conventional plastics by biopolymers, lightweight construction, materials with the best thermal insulation properties, energy reduction in thermal processes, materials for batteries and fuel cells and much more are addressed intensively in the courses and also dealt with by the professors in research projects. If you want to study sustainability, a degree in Applied Materials Science is an excellent choice.
