Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Intensive support for students in small groups (small dual degree programme with small course sizes and thus very close and personal contact between professors and students); intensive interlinking of theory and practice through structured practical phases in the university's partner companies; Strong emphasis on project work during academic studies; Opportunity to participate in research and development projects as part of study projects.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Internationalism is a defining element of the academic profile of the university. 160 active partnerships with universities all over the world offer a wide range of exchange opportunities for students and scientists. We value a culture of exchange and welcome. Annual organisation of International Summer School "Computational Engineering" with an average of 15 students from different countries. A course lasts three weeks. Taking on a ten-week guest professorship in Shanghai every year.

Special features regarding the equipment

The department has eight laboratories, e.g. for mechanical engineering and CAD. CNC 5-axis machining centre, various other machine tools, tool calibration device, thermo-solar testing station, self-developed test benches: Acoustic camera, wind tunnel, heat transfer, laser metrology (LDV, PIV), characteristic curves for fluid energy machines, etc. Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR) offers a wide range of different databases. In addition, students can use the HoWeR research portal at the click of a mouse, with which they can access all journals accessible online at the HWR Berlin.

Special features regarding research and development

As a result of the dual concept of the degree course and the close integration of theory and practice, various opportunities arise for collaboration with companies. In the last three years, application-oriented research has primarily focused on: Bidirectional evaporator valves for bidirectional heat pumps, metal refinement by sublimation furnace technology, modelling of combustion processes for variable solids (waste incineration)

Other special features

Members of the department participate in the Diversity and Anti-Discrimination Round Table & organise workshops for the HWR Diversity Day. The topic of sustainability is persistently promoted at HWR & was established as an independent area of responsibility within the Executive Board (headed by a professor of the department). The strategy paper "Wanting, Knowing, Doing – Sustainability at HWR" has been adopted & put into practice: Sustainability courses within Studium Generale, sustainability award for theses; "Nests in crates" – students of the department help birds nest on campus.
