Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The Romance Studies department in Bonn is characterised by innovative research-related teaching. The course contents reflect current research. In addition, a high percentage of classes are taught in foreign languages, in particular by native speaker instructors in Language Practice and Cultural Studies. The numerous international contacts enable regular guest lectureships and new perspectives. Modular lecture series are also offered in cooperation with the Institut français Bonn (IFB), the Centre Ernst Robert Curtius (CERC), the Interdisciplinary Latin America Centre (ILZ) and the IIC Cologne.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The Master's degree programmes in Romance Studies in Bonn deepen students' subject-specific knowledge, expand their knowledge of interdisciplinary aspects and strengthen their theoretical and methodological skills with an individual focus (e.g. in combination with the Master's degree course MA Español Como Lengua Extranjera in Salamanca, Ancient American Studies and German Studies in Bonn and the international double degree programmes with Florence, León and Paris). Integration into current research projects is strengthened by successfully acquired funding within the framework of the Excellence Strategy.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The special features of Romance Studies in Bonn include the international BA and MA degree courses with prestigious universities in France (Sorbonne Université), Italy (Florence) and Spain (León, Salamanca). We cooperate with 35 partner universities under the Erasmus programme, as well as two universities in Latin America. The Romance Studies department also sets itself apart with international research partnership and graduate schools (trinational graduate school "Europäische Gründungsmythen" (European Foundation Myths), doctoral course "Italianistica" of the universities of Bonn-Florence-Paris) as well as many (inter)national research projects.

Special features regarding the equipment

The technical equipment of the Bonn Romance Studies department corresponds to the general technical standard of the Universität Bonn: There are computer workstations available in the department's own library; Projectors and Starboard equipment are used in teaching. In addition, the Romance Studies department in Bonn has electronic doors to make the daily lives of staff and students with physical disabilities easier. During the pandemic, employees received further training in the use of electronic learning and teaching tools on a voluntary basis.

Special features regarding research activities

Our website provides an exhaustive overview of the special features. For example, a project on digitisation and its significance for Romance studies is currently underway. There are numerous (interdisciplinary) publications and projects on interculturality, literary studies and linguistics, research projects sponsored by the German Research Foundation, and work on multilingualism in didactics.

Other special features

The excellent teacher-student ratio is especially impressive in the Bonn department of Romance Studies. The department also cooperates closely with the Institut français Bonn (IFB), the Istituto italiano di Cultura Cologne (IIC) and the Interdisciplinary Latin America Centre Bonn (ILZ). These contacts, the clear advantages of the geographic location and the proximity to the Rhineland results in a very broad range of cultural events and partnerships both for teachers and students (concerts, readings, conferences, Carnival of the Bonn Romance Studies department, etc.).
