Further information provided by the department

Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The department offers an interdisciplinary colloquium in linguistics, literary studies and cultural studies, enriched by guest scholars, authors and translators. Collaborations with institutes and the Centre for Canadian Studies expand study opportunities such as the BA in European Literatures. Required work placements and cultural activities are anchored in the curriculum; The German-French Youth Office promotes language practice with native-speaking interns. Excursions abroad and exhibitions complement the programme and strengthen students' intercultural competence.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The department offers broad support through interdisciplinary colloquia in linguistics, literary studies and cultural studies, supported by guest scholars, authors and translators. Collaborations, for example with the Goethe University Frankfurt and the International Frankfurt Book Fair, open up practice-oriented insights into the MA International Literatures and Book Markets (two years). Required work placements, cultural activities and international excursions are anchored in the curriculum, supplemented by exhibitions on practical career orientation and intercultural education.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The department maintains a close international network with partner universities in Romance language-speaking countries in Europe, North Africa, Canada and Latin America. Collaborations exist at student and lecturer level, promote work placements abroad and support planned binational degrees with France, Italy and Spain. Collaborations with the Centre for Near and Middle Eastern Studies, the Instituto Camões and the Institut Ramon Llull expand the range of courses to include Portuguese and Catalan, to give students an in-depth intercultural education during their studies.

Special features regarding the equipment

The department has modern seminar rooms with PCs, projectors, audio-video systems, whiteboards, smartboards and pen displays. Researchers use camcorders, digital recording devices, virtual reality and other high-tech equipment on campus. The university library offers a recording studio, and the university computer centre hosts digital platforms for teaching. Numerous subject-specific databases and resources are regularly updated by the Department of Romance Studies to ensure optimal support for research and teaching.

Special features regarding research activities

The Department of Foreign Language Philology at the University of Marburg has a particularly strong profile in the fields of "Cultural Languages – Language Cultures", "Literary Writing" and "Cultures of the Religious". Ongoing projects explore how language and literature reflect and shape social processes. International collaborations and non-university partners, such as the Frankfurt Book Fair, strengthen the practical orientation. This interdisciplinary research promotes a deeper cultural understanding and consolidates Marburg's role as a centre for cultural studies research.

Other special features

The Department of Foreign Language Philology at the University of Marburg promotes diversity and sustainability through targeted programmes and collaborations. The university was recognised in the Stifterverband association's "Shaping Diversity" audit, which promotes equal opportunities and diversity in study and working conditions. In the field of sustainability, the department works with the Sustainability Office, which supports the transformation of the campus through projects. These initiatives promote an inclusive and sustainable environment that involves students and teaching staff alike.
