Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Teaching at the Department of Physics at the University of Marburg is characterised by its strong emphasis on research, an excellent student to instructor ratio and by many open offerings by students for students. Good networking with the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science and Psychology promotes an active study beyond subject boundaries. This allows students to choose from a variety of specialisations.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The work groups of the department are integrated into a wide range of international research networks and projects. Students can also benefit from these connections in their Bachelor's and Master's theses. In particular because of the exclusively English-language degree course "Functional Materials", the proportion of international students in the department is high. This Master's degree programme has met with great interest, especially in middle and east Asia. The department is also involved in the MO:VE programme (Marburg Online - Virtual Exchange) of the university. Students are involved in international research cooperations of the work groups, the proportion of students of a class who take advantage of this option for exchange is about 5 percent.

Special features regarding the equipment

There is a large number of high-quality research equipment and large-scale equipment. Amongst these: Scanning and transmission electron microscope with CS correction, X-ray diffractometer, femtosecond laser system with optical parametric oscillator, photoelectron spectrometer of the highest resolution, molecular beam and MOVPE epitaxy equipment, and various computer clusters. In addition, the department has an excellently equipped mechanical precision workshop and an innovative electronics laboratory.

Special features regarding research activities

The department is involved in national, international and interdisciplinary research. These include the areas of solid state physics in many variations (semiconductors, heterostructures, nanophysics, optoelectronics, molecular solid state bodies, magnetic properties and surfaces and interfaces), neurophysics and classical dynamics with turbulence or granular media and astrophysics. More closely applied research can be found in the areas of: theoretical microbiology, biophysics, development of highly efficient solar cells, battery research, development of new laser concepts.

Other special features

The Department of Physics is centrally located in Marburg's Old Town. Not only the city, but also the department is "small". This is a big advantage, because it enables an excellent student-to-faculty ratio and makes it easy to get in touch with teachers and fellow students. The paths between departments are short and the close cooperation with, for example, the Centre for Synthetic Microbiology (SYNMIKRO), the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Terrestrial Microbiology and the Materials Sciences Centre (WZMW) enables students to experience research at the highest level.
