Further information provided by the department

Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

One-month supplementary course before the first Semester; Small groups with a good relationship between students and instructors, particularly in advanced courses and special reading courses; Mathematikum (hands-on mathematical museum) integrated into teacher training.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Small study groups, ensuring an excellent relationship between students and instructors; Thanks to the size of the university, students can choose from an extensive selection of minor subjects and compulsory elective modules in other subjects.

Special features regarding the international orientation

In addition to the teaching-related collaborations within the Erasmus network and beyond (e.g. USA and China), Bachelor's and Master's students in particular also benefit from the research-related collaborations that the institute or individual work groups have established – above all from the numerous seminars offered by visiting scientists.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

Umeå universitet, Schweden; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, Türkei Università degli Studi di Padova, Italien; Sichuan University, VR China; Université Grenoble Alpes, Frankreich; Universidad de Granada, Spanien; Universidad de Jaén, Spanien; Universidad de Cantabria, Spanien

Special features regarding the equipment

Library of the Mathematics Institute: many journals available from the first edition to advanced year issues; Several historical gems are housed in the section for books published before 1950. Building: Architecture and interior with 1950s – 1960s charm paired with modern technology, e.g. PC pool that was completely refurbished in 2019, where statistics courses with R or programming courses with a state-of-the-art hardware and software are held.

Special features regarding research activities

Research areas: Algebraic Lie Theory, Approximation Theory, Financial Mathematics, Group Theory, Combinatorics, Cryptography, Non-Linear Differential Equations, Stochastics; Individual research projects are funded by the DFG; Conferences "PDE days" (partial differential equations) together with Frankfurt, Karlsruhe and Cologne (regularly), North German Group Theory Research Group (occasionally); Research seminar "Groups, Geometry, Dynamics", which combines multiple subject areas, joint seminar "Lie Theory and Complex Geometry" with Marburg.

Other special features

"Learning islands" in the Institute of Mathematics, i.e. rooms with tables, chairs and chalkboards in which students can meet to study together, work on projects, prepare for examinations, etc.; Overall familiar atmosphere in the institute; often there are visiting international lecturers, e.g. Humboldt scholarship holders, Mercator professors, international doctoral candidates and postdoctoral students.
