Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The Bachelor's degree programme in Educational Science places a stronger focus on the topics of pedagogical fields of action and pedagogical diagnostics as well as on the implementation of research projects. In addition, the courses are characterised by a mixture of practical relevance and a focus on research. One unique feature of this scientific discipline is the interdisciplinary empirical research into teaching, learning and educational processes as well as educational trajectories from early childhood to adulthood in different institutional contexts.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The Master's degree programme provides in-depth knowledge of the educational, psychological and sociological principles of educational science as well as in-depth knowledge of the quantitative and qualitative methods of social research. It deals with individual, social, organisational, administrative and societal factors influencing educational and learning processes and educational outcomes. The challenges in dealing with heterogeneity are given special consideration.

Special features regarding research activities

Depending on the research question, which is usually interdisciplinary, a broad spectrum of methods of data collection and evaluation is used. Various forms of computer-aided content analysis, methods of reconstructive social research, in particular knowledge sociological discourse analysis or documentary methods, but also univariate and multivariate descriptive and statistical methods of data analysis, are used in current topics of education and learning, e.g. questions of trust, social inequality and educational and learning partnerships.

Other special features

The academic discipline includes the areas of specialisation general educational science, teaching and school research, primary school research and extra-curricular education, to which a total of 18 work areas contribute. With projects and publications on topics such as teaching and learning conditions, early childhood education, heterogeneity, school research and empirical education and university research, the academic discipline is the core discipline of the knowledge alliance "Educational Processes and Outcomes" of FU Berlin.
