Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The department offers a broad portfolio of degree courses based on a traditional engineering and scientific education, with new programmes being developed in line with the principle of sustainability. Courses are tailored to economic needs and social requirements; The programme provides students with an education that is geared towards career opportunities. The KOMPASS orientation semester makes it easier for students to start their studies. We attach great importance to a cooperative and dialogue-oriented teaching and learning environment in small groups.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The department offers a broad portfolio of degree courses based on a traditional engineering and scientific education, with new programmes being developed in line with the principle of sustainability. Courses are tailored to economic needs and social requirements; The programme provides students with an education that is geared towards career opportunities. In the Master's degree, independence and cooperation are further promoted. We attach great importance to a cooperative and dialogue-oriented teaching and learning environment in small groups.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Students are encouraged to complete a semester abroad; An individual "learning agreement" is drawn up for this purpose. There are many universities to choose from within the Erasmus network. There are partnerships with international universities that are actively used (e.g. excursions, individual exchange, theses). Modules taught in English are offered, there are two degree courses taught in English (one Bachelor's degree, one Master's degree). Examinations can be taken in German or English. Theses can be submitted in English.

Special features regarding the equipment

Teaching takes place in renovated buildings and rooms with the latest media technology as well as state-of-the-art laboratories. The library is equipped with extensive e-media and access to national and international databases, which enable comprehensive research in all areas. Studies are organised via the university information system with computer support. E-learning platforms such as ILIAS are widely used in teaching. Online teaching is increasingly being expanded. WiFi is of course available throughout the campus.

Special features regarding research and development

The Department of Engineering and Natural Sciences is characterised by its intensive research work and numerous third-party funding. The department is involved in two research focuses "Sustainable Processes" and "Digital Change". The "Pool-in-Loop" project for the chemical recycling of plastics (Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), duration seven years, scope EUR 5 million) is an example of this. The university has several associated institutes, e.g. "Institute of Polymer Research" or "Polymer Service GmbH Merseburg". Due to its own right to confer doctoral degrees, a large number of doctoral candidates are supervised in addition to collaborative doctorates.

Other special features

The university campus is embedded within sprawling green spaces, which enables quiet and focused study. Student residences are located directly on campus, as are sports facilities, a theatre and a cinema.; There is also a student club and student church communities. Merseburg is a quiet, nice city with 35,000 inhabitants and cheap housing. The major cities of Leipzig and Halle are nearby. In addition to technical courses, the university offers courses in the social, cultural, economic and information sciences. This guarantees a diverse student body.
