a) in a subject-relevant Bachelor’s programme in Physics or
b) in a physics-related programme with 180 credit points
or proof of a comparable German or international professionally qualifying degree.
A programme is deemed physics-related if at least 60 CP have been completed in physics subjects, 30 CP of which in modern physics.
Annotation
In the profile study area, students can take modules outside the subject culture of physics on the one hand and get to know the working groups at the department on the other. This serves to raise the profile and bearings of the students and helps in the selection of the field of work in which the research block and the Master's thesis are to be carried out.
Participation in current research areas of the working groups takes place in the research block. It is made up of the working group internship, the research internship and the Master's thesis. The central element of the Master's degree programme is the Master's thesis, in which the ability to conduct independent research is acquired by solving a current problem.
If there is sufficient demand, it is possible that the courses and study achievements are or can be taught entirely in English.
Research focuses
In the free elective Physics, between three and six modules are expected to be taken from the working groups’ research areas. These can be summarised in the following priorities:
Biological and Statistical Physics, Advanced Experimental Physics, Advanced Theoretical Physics, Methods of Physics, Optics and Spectroscopy, Condensed Matter Physics, Systems and Applications.
Candidates are free, to the extent of their options, to choose a field of work for the master's thesis. Typically, a working group is found independently and a topic is chosen in consultation with the supervisors. A choice from a wide range is possible:
- Research activities at the department (astro-, bio- and neurophysics, experimental and theoretical semiconductor physics, physics of complex systems,
Molecular solids, surface physics, structural and technological research, many particle physics)
- Research networks and institutions (Scientific Centre for Materials Science, Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 1083 Structure and Dynamics
inner interfaces, SFB/TRR 135 cardiac mechanisms of perception, research training groups functionality of semiconductors and the brain in action,
LOEWE Centre Synmikro, research groups and priority and joint projects.
However, there is also the possibility to do research in research groups outside and possibly in companies, clearly in coordination with the department.
