Annotation

The moving image, film, is one of the most striking and formative cultural achievements of modernity. It has become not only an art form, but a form of knowledge, even a form of life. For this reason alone, it is important to understand and research film – in the comprehensive sense as a differentiated totality of moving images. In recent decades, the moving image has once again changed and multiplied – not only through its digitalisation – and it continues to be in a state of flux. For example, it has spread far beyond its traditional milieu, the cinema. It now runs on all kinds of screens, even moving and very small ones. The number of moving images alone has risen rapidly due to platforms such as YouTube and streaming services of all kinds. Film has differentiated itself into a large number of local and minority film cultures. The global dissemination and exchange of moving images from completely different media cultures around the world has given rise to a new, multi-perspective relationship between film cultures.
