Description

Description

Better together. For life.
At the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), we are committed to excellence in research, education, and comprehensive healthcare across our clinics. Every day, our team of approximately 15,300 dedicated employees works to make the world a healthier place. Our goal is to be one of the leading university hospitals while also being the best employer in our industry.

At UKE, we believe that meaningful and successful work should align with our employees' personal needs and individual lifestyles. Just as diverse as these needs are, so too is the variety of personalized solutions we offer.
Welcome to the UKE.

Main tasks

Cancer undergoes a complex parasitic evolution, continuously evading immune system detection while orchestrating profound changes in its surrounding microenvironment, referred to as the tumor microenvironment (TME). Beyond intrinsic tumor factors, host-related elements—such as the microbiota, microbiota-derived metabolites, diet, and hormones—collectively known as the macroenvironment, play a pivotal role in shaping the TME and potentially exacerbating cancer progression.

This research project will investigate how the immune system is bidirectionally influenced by both the microenvironment and macroenvironment during carcinogenesis and therapy. By leveraging state-of-the-art multi-omics techniques—including single-cell sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, shotgun metagenomic sequencing, and metabolomic screening—alongside advanced murine cancer models and in vitro systems, we aim to elucidate the intricate interplay between the TME and the macroenvironment in driving cancer progression and therapy resistance. This project builds on previous studies, such as Tintelnot et al., Nature 2023, and Tintelnot et al., Cancer Immunology Research 2024.

We are seeking a motivated and innovative candidate with a passion for science and the curiosity to think creatively and push boundaries. The primary goal of this position is to advance our understanding of the tumor macro- and microenvironment and its influence on the immune system in the context of cancer. Your expertise will be instrumental in uncovering the molecular mechanisms driving cancer progression and therapy resistance, with the ultimate aim of translating these insights into clinical benefits for patients.

This position is temporary for three years in accordance with WissZeitVG and to be filled with 65 % of the regular weekly working hours.

Your Profile

  • Completed academic studies in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, human biology, physiology, immunology or related subjects
  • Profound knowledge in either chemistry (drug design, chemichal modification of metabolites), immunology, microbiota, cancer biology or cancer metabolism
  • Prior knowledge in bioinformatic analysis of multi-omic data and/or work with laboratory mice is a plus
  • High degree of intrinsic motivation

Immunity status

Please note that employment is contingent upon proof of immunization or immunity against the measles virus, in accordance with applicable legal and medical requirements. Documentation (e.g., vaccination certificate) must be provided before employment begins.
