The International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling (IMPRS-ESM) invites outstanding students from all over the world to apply for PhD positions in our renowned PhD program. Based in Hamburg, our program offers excellent training and top-level structured supervision in climate research, supported by the renowned Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) and the Universität Hamburg (UHH).

Who Should Apply? 

The School encompasses the broader field of Earth sciences, including economics and social sciences, emphasizing the physical system in the natural science part of the program. Our program is open to applicants who have a Master's degree (with written thesis) in physics, geophysical sciences (including meteorology and oceanography), ecology, mathematics, computer science, engineering, economics, or political science. Students who are still working on their Master's thesis are also encouraged to apply.

What We Offer

  • Financial support: Receive funding of about 2,150 Euros per month for three years.
  • No tuition fees: Only a semester fee is charged by the university (includes ticket for public transport).
