The Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine in Münster, Germany, has an joint opening for a

PhD Student in Bioinformatics and Genomics (m/f/d)

in the Tissue Morphogenesis Department ( and the Bioinformatics Service Unit (

Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ralf Adams and Dr. Kai Kruse, the successful candidate (m/f/d) will utilise advanced bioinformatic approaches to investigate the intricate interactions between endothelial cells and the surrounding tissue in bone. This will involve

  • analysing state-of-the-art, genome-wide gene expression, chromatin structure, and transcription factor binding datasets
  • characterising cellular and molecular heterogeneity through the exploration and comparison of tissue-specific RNA-, single-cell RNA-, and ATAC seq datasets
  • exploring protein-DNA interactions using techniques such as ChIP-seq or CUT&RUN
  • integrating publicly available datasets relevant to the systems under study
  • developing and testing new bioinformatic tools to address targeted research questions.

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated PhD student (m/f/d) to undertake pioneering research in bioinformatics and genomics at the interface with biology. The applicant (m/f/d) should bring along a Master’s degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, (bio)-statistics, mathematics, or related fields. The ideal candidate (m/f/d) will demonstrate a strong drive to excel in a dynamic, international, and collaborative research environment. Previous experience in genome-wide data analysis, including RNA-seq, single-cell RNA-seq, or ChIP-seq, as well as basic competence in a programming language such as Python or R will be advantageous. Please indicate your proficiency level in your cover letter.

  • a fixed-term appointment for three years, with the possibility of further extension contingent upon a successful evaluation
  • salary is in accordance with pay group 13 of the TVöD
