Special features regarding teaching

Very good teacher-student-teacher ratio: Small learning and exercise groups ensure a good learning environment, many student tutors; High percentage of exercises: The number of tutorial hours is always at least as high as the number of lecture hours in a class; Elite programme for supporting highly qualified students; very good facilities for computer-assisted teaching; supported learning for students to gain their own practical experience with circuits/hardware; Mentoring programme for female students; Strong links with Computer Science.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Establishment of English-language degree courses (Electrical Systems Engineering and Computer Engineering (optional)); Range of degree courses in German is supplemented with courses in English (Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering (compulsory elective only)); students are recommended to spend a semester abroad at international partner universities (ECTS points can be transferred); intensive contact and cooperation with international research partners.

Special features regarding the equipment

Excellently equipped laboratories in the departments; special laboratories: clean room, high-frequency measurement chamber; acoustics lab; solar simulator; test vehicles with hybrid drives, which the students can use for "tinkering" in an informal atmosphere; two excellently equipped "pool rooms" for computer-assisted teaching.

Special features regarding research activities

Specialisation in optical communication technology and optoelectronics (collaboration with Physics, Chemistry); world records in data rates achieved via fibre optics; professorship in Signal and System Theory with funding from the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation; Close networking with Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering in collaborative research centre (SFB); "Energy engineering competence centre" in conjunction with Mechanical Engineering; close collaboration with "Advanced Systems Engineering" from the Fraunhofer group located on campus; Very good links with local industry (e.g. BMBF Spitzencluster [peak cluster] ITsOWL)

Support for founders

Intensive cooperation with the central technology promotion offices of the university (e.g. Technology Transfer and Founders Center (TecUP), Garage33 etc.) organised by vice president for knowledge and technology transfer.

Other special features

We are a comparatively small department that faces the resulting "challenges" as follows: comprehensive basic training in all major subjects of Electrical Engineering and specialisation in some key areas (e.g. Optical Communications Engineering); Close links with computer science, mechanical engineering, economics and physics); Good contact is maintained between lecturers and students (easy for students to reach professors, short distances, early involvement of students in research projects).
