Special features regarding teaching

The faculty offers students innovative teaching concepts which build on each other with a very good staff-student ratio and practice-oriented components. All compulsory lectures are supported by exercises in small groups (max. 20 students). Tutorials are also offered. Here, students can ask questions each week about the topics covered in the lectures and exercises and work on the solutions together. The faculty has an alliance with the Faculty of ETIT (Electrical and Information Engineering) at Ruhr-Universität Bochum and its research and teaching portfolio is therefore unique in Germany.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Teaching: The faculty offers an international study programme in English with the degree course in Automation and Robotics. Furthermore, approximately 50% of the Master's degree course in Electrical and Information Technology can be studied in English. 20% of the lecturers hold a visiting professorship abroad (e.g. USA). Research: The faculty makes first-class and internationally recognised contributions to the development of academic knowledge in the key focus areas of "Electrical Energy Engineering" and "Information and Communication Technology".

Special features regarding the equipment

The faculty has excellently equipped labs and research facilities for teaching and research. This includes: multi-networking technology lab, robot swarm control lab, smart grid communications lab, electric vehicle interoperability lab, smart home lab, 7 high-voltage labs, EMC lab, deposition lab, high frequency measurement lab, optical transmission lab, clean room. Other facilities: the Institute of Energy Systems, Energy Efficiency and Energy Economics as well as the Robotics Research Institute. Special highlight: the Electromobility, infrastructure and Networks competence centre.

Special features regarding research activities

The faculty makes first-class and internationally recognised contributions to the development of academic knowledge in the key focus areas of "Electrical Energy Engineering" and "Information and Communication Technology" and so plays an active role in shaping the current fields of the future – Industry 4.0 and Cyber-Physical Systems. The link between Energy Engineering and Communication Technology in joint research is a unique feature. The faculty achieves its high level of research through intensive national and international cooperation.

Support for founders

TU Dortmund initiates, funds and honours company start-ups and transfer from science. It actively supports its students, graduates and staff in the development and implementation of business ideas, in the evaluation, registration and utilisation of inventions and patents as well as in the transfer of knowledge and technology. The tu>startup start-up initiative and technology transfer at TU Dortmund have received multiple awards, including ‘EXIST-Gründungskultur’ and ‘Signo’ of the BMWi. These successes were firmly integrated into the TU with the creation of the Centre for Entrepreneurship & Transfer.

Other special features

The Faculty of Electrical and Information Technology seeks to unify teaching and research and uses this approach in a research-oriented teaching programme that is continually updated and focused on the requirements of students and subsequent employers in science and industry. Flexible opportunities for the choice of course and practice-oriented components, an adequate staff-student ratio, as well as numerous opportunities for further academic qualification up to the doctorate level ensure that the appeal of the courses on offer extends beyond the region.
