Special features regarding teaching

Bachelor's/Master's degree course in the 7+3 semester format; institutionalised work placement studies (BPS) which are integrated into studies and are awarded credits; Project modules; interdisciplinary courses in the field of Social Sciences, Law, Economics and Technical English; Good facilities in the departments with student workstations and rooms for group work; Numerous funded excursions; preliminary mathematics course, "ProMathe" programme with numerous courses in Mathematical Propaedeutics.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Numerous international collaborations in research and teaching; participation in the Vietnamese-German University (VGU) in Ho Chi Minh City; academic coordination of the International Summer University and the International Winter University at the University of Kassel; international online Master´s degree programme Wind Energy Systems, I.DEAR exchange programme with the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo/Mendoza in Argentina, ERASMUS+ student exchange with universities in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Turkey and Italy.

Special features regarding the equipment

Very good rooms and technical facilities, modern laboratories in the fields of Materials, Geoengineering and Mechanics, a clamping frame for construction-related applications, a 1,200 m² hydraulic engineering hall as well as external laboratories near the sewage plant and in the waste-to-energy plant in Kassel.

Special features regarding research activities

Climate change and environmental protection, technological competition and demographic development place high demands on research and development. The department has addressed these questions and broken them down to the level of civil and environmental engineering in an effort to anchor itself and its areas of research focus within the research profile of the University of Kassel. The main focus is on Materials Engineering, Climate Protection and Socio-Technical Systems for Networked Living.

Support for founders

Kassel University has been a "start-up university" (BMWi) since 2013. Support for business start-ups is provided by the start-up agency UNIKAT of Kassel University in the fields of consulting, product development and financing, and by making available rooms in the Science Park Kassel on university grounds.

Other special features

Quality management in instruction: Quality-assurance system for the department’s own degree courses which has been refined over many years, with regular annual surveys of new students, students in the fourth study semester and students at the time of degree completion; Regular discussion of results with the departmental student body in the course committee, regular course evaluations and surveys on student workload.
