Special features regarding teaching

The Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers a broad range of training in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Computational Engineering. Tutorials and small-group exercises promote access to course content and facilitate intensive supervision of students. Building on the convey of well-grounded fundamentals, the teaching staff’s superb links to professionals in the field mean application-focussed training. The labs and workshops illustrate the acquired theoretical skills as part of various practicals.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The faculty has a broad network of research institutions and industry partners around the world. There are structured programmes for the promotion of international mobility of students and young researchers as part of joint research projects. Students are given intensive support in the planning of periods abroad and practicals (e.g. Erasmus). The international English-language degree course "Computational Engineering" with a sister course at the Vietnamese-German-University (VGU) is in great demand worldwide.

Special features regarding the equipment

The department has excellent IT equipment for use in teaching, including five computer pools with 150 PCs and extensive software packages as well as an extensively equipped virtual reality laboratory (VR lab) where methods and concepts for digital inspection of buildings and planning-oriented tools are created. All technical test facilities in the modern test hall, extensive laboratory facilities and the faculty's own boundary layer wind tunnel are used in teaching.

Special features regarding research activities

In addition to processing of numerous individual support projects, the faculty is involved in several research associations. With a focus on the computer-oriented methods in tunnel construction, for example, the Collaborative Research Centre 837 "Interaction Modeling in Mechanized Tunneling" funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) enables students to pursue a course of study that is closely related to research, as part of coursework and final theses. The same is also true for the two Research Units based in the field of material testing (Research Unit 1498 "AKR") and mechanics (Research Unit 797 "Microplast").

Support for founders

Together with the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration and the two other engineering faculties, the faculty hosts the "Fit für die Gründung" start-up series of events for doctoral students. Workshops, panel discussions and other formats provide information with regard to business start-ups and an opportunity to network with others. The Worldfactory offers free advice, seminars, premises and a tasting workshop taster workshop. In addition, engineering students have the opportunity to attend courses on business start-ups in the faculty of economics.

Other special features

There are numerous individually tailored projects on offer to increase the proportion of female students and women in the academic fields. These include project workshops for female school pupils, Girls Day and the ‘CrossING’ careers event for graduates, which was awarded Ruhr University Bochum’s Lore-Agnes Prize in 2015. Intensive support is provided for students in the initial study phase.
