Special features regarding teaching

The profile of architectural teaching at the TU is shaped by design; this key skill is at the heart of the "Braunschweig School". This has been confirmed by the corresponding evaluations and has been positively assessed. Designing is understood to be "the ability to conceive the technological aspect of construction, the utilitarian functions of objects, of the house and the city as well as their impact and shape all as one entity and to lead creatively to a new unit".

Special features regarding the international orientation

Studies at TU Braunschweig have an international focus. In addition to courses with international relevance, there is also support for periods of guest study at one of our partner universities, lasting from one semester to up to one academic year. A year abroad is integrated into the Architecture+ degree course. Partner universities offer a wide range of exchange opportunities across Europe and worldwide. An international coordination service offers intensive guidance and helps with any questions and obstacles.

Special features regarding the equipment

The degree course in architecture course features a model-building workshop with numerous devices for milling, lasers, plotters, wood workshop, paint room, assembly room, etc. Some of the decentralised institutes feature other equipment as well as a computer pool available for use by students. Each art room has its own model-building area/model workshop. With the Collection for Architecture and Civil Engineering SAIB, the Department of Architecture has its own archive with important collections of materials by Braunschweig-based artists, architects and students.

Special features regarding research activities

The field of Architecture combines a broad range of subject areas for joint activities and conducts research and teaching with diverse research topics. Interdisciplinary research activities link the areas of architecture with working groups from other faculties and non-university research institutions. The research relates to fundamental principles and theories of architecture as well as to practical applications, and combines aspects from aesthetics to shape and use, all the way through to technology and a focus on the city of the future.

Support for founders

At TU Braunschweig, support to business start-ups is not organised in a decentralised manner and is instead the central mission for the TU and the region. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Reza Asghari, the Entrepeneurship Hub supports students, alumni and academic staff at Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences, TU Braunschweig and Braunschweig University of Art (HBK) who want to start their own business. The aim is to teach people about starting a business as a rewarding and fulfilling career option and to create a lively start-up culture in the region.

Other special features

The faculty has its own exhibition building – the Architecture Pavilion by Gerkan, Marg and Partner – that hosts presentations of the designs and theses as well as graduate celebrations, exhibitions and guest lectures. With the Bet tfila research post for Jewish architecture, the Department of Architecture has a unique, internationally networked facility for the investigation primarily of synagogue architecture. At their own initiative, each semester, graduates publish a ‘MasterThesis’ publication containing their final theses.
