Special features regarding teaching

The innovative teaching and learning concept of the model course of study imparts medical skills in direct relation to professional practice in interdisciplinary, organ- and subject-centred modules. The needs of different types of learners are taken into account and self-directed learning is encouraged. The degree course allows students to choose between different profiles and focuses on future-oriented topics such as interdisciplinary work, outpatient medicine, gender and diversity, and digitalisation.

Arrangements of special exercises at the department

With the SkillsLab, the Medical Faculty OWL has a proven and at the same time future-proof teaching and learning environment in which medical students acquire practical medical skills in a targeted manner - from the 1st semester and throughout the entire degree course. The regular use of simulation persons, VR scenarios and interprofessional training units promote realistic learning situations.

Special features regarding research activities

The research profile "Medicine for People with Disabilities and Chronic Diseases" of the Faculty of Medicine OWL comprises the two main research areas "Brain - Impairment - Participation" and "Intelligent Systems - Assistance - Interprofessional Networking" as well as the two perspective fields "Microbial Diversity in the Human Habitat" and "Data Science for Medical Care". Gender- and diversity-sensitive medicine is anchored cross-sectionally. A research practice network will be established to promote research activities in the outpatient setting.

Other special features

The Model programme in Medicine offers the option of earning the additional degree of Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences (B. Sc.) with only one additional semester. According to their individual strengths and interests, students choose one of five interdisciplinary profiles (diversity, health, care / medical humanities / molecular medicine / psyche, language, communication / tech::med.), which accompanies them throughout the first six semesters. The additional seventh semester is used to write a Bachelor's thesis in the corresponding subject area.
