Special features regarding teaching

Interdisciplinary module structure oriented towards organs or organ systems and life phases (abolition of the separation between pre-clinic and clinic); problem-oriented learning, communicative competences as central elements of the study programme; high practical component from the beginning (14-day practical day, clinical internships, decentralised study phase - learning in the clinic); 8-week scientific intern ship in the 6th semester.

Arrangements of special exercises at the department

MHB has set up a Skills Lab at both the Neuruppin and Brandenburg an der Havel sites. MHB's cross-site Skills Lab is one of the few in Germany to be certified by the Practical Skills Committee (APF) of the Society for Medical Education (GMA). Students can learn and develop both practical skills and their communicative competencies with appropriate soft skills in the Skills Lab. They are guided by student tutors.

Special features regarding research activities

The founding mission of the MHB is to improve health care in non-metropolitan regions, and medical research is also oriented towards this goal. Central to this are questions of care for patients with population-relevant diseases. The MHB has established three research centres: the Coordination Centre for Clinical Studies Brandenburg (KKS-BB), the Centre for Health Services Research (ZVF-BB) and the Centre for Disease-Oriented Translational Basic Research (ZKTG-BB). Students also participate in the integrated working groups of the centres.

Other special features

The study of medicine is practice-oriented from the beginning and becomes more and more embedded in clinical everyday life in the degree. After beginning their studies in Neuruppin, students transfer to the Brandenburg an der Havel location in the 5th semester. From the 8th semester onwards, studies take place at the anchor sites, the academic teaching hospitals of the MHB. This gives students extensive clinical experience even before they enter the internship year. Students at MHB can get to know about 5-8 clinics in the course of their studies.
