Special features regarding teaching

Mobility is our passion. The aim of the training in the department is to enable students to independently apply scientific and practically oriented methods in the development and design of road and rail vehicles, as well as aircraft. The following are integrated: the Laboratories for Aerodynamics, Acoustics, CAD, Lightweight Construction as well as the Vehicle Laboratory, Flight Laboratory with flight simulator, Aircraft System Laboratory and the Laboratory for Cabins and Cabin Systems, in which – in addition to teaching – practically oriented research and development work is carried out.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Students who want to study abroad can find all of the important information on our website. The department of Vehicle Engineering and Aircraft Construction also offers English-language modules in both degree courses. It also supports cooperative doctorates with partner universities in Great Britain and Spain. Modules for improving foreign language skills can also be incorporated into the curriculum.

Special features regarding the equipment

The Automotive and Aeronautical Engineering department has well-equipped laboratories for all specialist disciplines, including mechatronics for teaching, research and state-of-the-art transfer. Highlights include the laboratory for cabins and cabin systems at the Hamburg Center of Aviation Training (HCAT) as well as the laboratory for acoustics that emerged as part of the Cluster of Excellence competition hosted by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The Centre for Applied Aviation Research (ZAL) complements the infrastructure.

Special features regarding research and development

The department represented in ongoing research projects in Vehicle and Aircraft Construction. In Vehicle Construction, research is conducted on new vehicle and mobility concepts beyond the limits of the department. Research in aircraft construction is carried out in the affiliated laboratories, the Hamburg Centre of Aviation Training and the Centre for Applied Aviation Research. We have successfully acquired projects in national aviation research programmes (Lufo).

Support for founders

The Automotive Engineering and Aircraft Construction department uses the general services of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences as part of its career service. It offers workshops and advice on the transition from university to work, including extensive guidance and support for spin-offs.

Other special features

The students in the department of Vehicle Engineering and Aircraft Construction have been supported by the Wagenbauschule funding association for 50 years. Aims: Support for teaching in the department of Vehicle Engineering and Aircraft Construction of the HAW Hamburg, promoting outstanding subject-specific projects in teaching and research, encouraging the exchange of information between the department and industry, providing former students with a discussion and communication forum, fostering international contacts and the PR work of the department.
