Special features regarding teaching

Comprehensive counselling available thanks to strong links between the subject-specific student advice unit and numerous other advisory offices and the professors; very good cooperation between students and teaching staff, e.g. in committees and in curricular development; very committed and skilled departmental student organisation; individual curriculum planning and monitoring of academic progress; Small groups, numerous tutorials, very good staff-student ratio; numerous collaborations in teaching and research, including with institutes of the Faculty of Medicine.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The department offers another Master's degree course held in English within the Faculty of Natural Sciences there are 6 internationally focused Master's programmes held in English in total. Participation in international trade fairs, efforts made to increase internationalisation in the faculty's bachelor's degree courses.

Special features regarding the equipment

New appointments permitted the set-up of state-of-the-art laboratories and special test facilities for practical experiments. The latest simulation tools are also used to systematically incorporate experimental findings into the design of apparatuses and processes. Students of the Master's programme in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology can use the facilities of the Biology faculty and some institutes of the Medical Faculty of the University of Ulm as well as the Biotechnology faculty of the Biberach University of Applied Sciences.

Special features regarding research activities

The Cluster of Excellence for Battery Research (POLiS) turns the Wissenschaftsstadt in Ulm into a forge for the future of high-performance, reliable batteries and fuel cells. To cope with energy and raw material change, the department also conducts research at the interface of basic and application-oriented research in order to optimise separation processes and establish new chemical findings on a technical scale. This also includes the design and optimisation of (photo)chemical processes and reactors as well as the research of photocatalytically active materials (SFB CataLight).

Support for founders

Students have the opportunity to participate in the cooperative Founder’s Garage project at the University of Ulm, Ulm University of Applied Sciences, Biberach University of Applied Sciences and Hochschule Neu-Ulm. The project gives students an opportunity to work on their own projects, develop and evaluate their ideas and find ways to realise them. At the same time, a theoretical background in entrepreneurship and project management is given.

Other special features

The curriculum of the application-oriented master's degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology is flexible, offering 6- or 7-semester bachelor's degrees. Attractive occupational fields are open to graduates, for example in biomedicine research institutes, in biotechnology and in the pharmaceutical industry as well as with public authorities. Together with the Medical Faculty and the Biberach University of Applied Sciences, a graduate college was applied for with the DFG in the field of pharmaceutical biotechnology.
