Special features regarding teaching

Broad stage I studies in the Natural Sciences and Engineering; Seminar-style class with max. 40 students in extension studies; Gaps in knowledge are evened out in student tutorials; Placements with an average of 14 students; Link to subject-specific content during optional project phase in the 1st. semesters.; independent project work from the 5th sem. with optional specialisation in subsequent semesters; Integrated practical semester at another university, in industry or research institution; Promotion of key skills in two optional required .

Special features regarding the international orientation

Support for students who want to go abroad from the International Office (help e.g. for Erasmus study visits for incoming and outgoing students). Two mobility window in the Biotechnology degree course after the fourth and fifth semesters. Practical semester can be completed abroad. Buddy programme for incoming students. There are contractual agreements with many partner universities.

Special features regarding the equipment

Modern laboratories with up-to-date equipment that meet the requirements of modern biotechnology training. For this purpose, experimental microbial, molecular biological and biochemical basic equipment is available and is supplemented by a bio-processing technology infrastructure. In the upstream area, upgraded bioreactors are available. The whole reconditioning process from the separator, homogeniser, micro and ultrafiltration through to expanded bed adsorption and traditional chromatography steps for the purification of recombinant proteins is also available.

Special features regarding research and development

Research is focused on integrated production processes of recombinant pharmaceutical proteins and technical enzymes. This includes the production and characterisation of sustainable peptide-based antibiotics and fully automated processes for the production of potential malaria vaccines. The latter form the basis for later highly intensified GMP productions. The focus is on quality by design, optimising upstream and downstream operation by means of design of experiments and multivariate data analysis for evaluating cyclical processes and product quality.

Other special features

In Stage I studies, close collaboration with the Process Engineering and Environmental Engineering departments within the faculty of Life Sciences. Possibility of interdisciplinary research with these departments and partner universities in various research and transfer centres and on research focuses of the faculty of Life Sciences.
