Special features regarding teaching

At the GeoCenter, the research focus is reflected in the teaching: Causes and consequences of climate change, securing and sustainable use of resources, development and optimisation of materials, geodynamics and evolution of life. Depending on your interests, you can choose between two fields of study in the B.Sc. and three in the M.Sc. In the M.Sc. the fields of study Palaeobiology and Climate and Earth Systems are offered in English, all other fields of study are offered in German. The MSc course in Geothermal Energy/Geoenergy is a joint degree programme in cooperation with the TU Munich.

Special features regarding the equipment

Our spectrum comprises: Mineral analysis (X-Ray facilities, Electron microprobe, Calorimetry, Thermal analyses); Rock fabrics analysis (Rockmagnetic laboratory, Crystallographic orientation analysis); Analysis of fine structures (SEM-EDX, EBSD, CT-Scanner, Cathodoluminescence); Petrophysics (Porosimetry, Permeametry, Lasergranulometry, Thermal conductivity, Ultrasonic velocities); Geochemical analysis (Class <1000 metal-free clean room lab for isotope and trace element analysis, aqueous field and laboratory analysis, XRF, LA ICP-MS, solution ICP-MS); Isotope analysis.

Special features regarding research activities

The GeoCentre has an international reputation in climate impact research and paleoenvironmental reconstruction, georesource research, and construction chemistry and materials research. Participation in international ship cruises and the IPCC reflect this, as do the many cooperative ventures with industry. Here, the cooperation of hydro- and engineering geology with other institutes on water quality and natural hazards should be mentioned, as well as materials research in mineralogy or research on the geothermal use of deep reservoirs in sedimentology.

Support for founders

Students are supported and advised by the FAU start-up centres. There are regular events and courses specifically geared towards business start-ups.

Other special features

The Geosciences department at the FAU is one of the leading departments in Europe for isotope analyses.
