Special features regarding teaching

Integration of new research directions, e.g. bioinformatics, in research and teaching with own professorship. Cross-entry from Life-Sciences BSc degree courses into the Master's degree course is possible. In the master's degree course, students can choose between two profile lines. Graduates of the state examination have the option of an accessory diploma in pharmacy as well as a two-semester further qualification by taking the Master's degree course profile line "Regulatory Affairs & Drug Development". During the degree course, reorientation between the different courses of study is possible.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Through planned internships abroad in the Master's degree course, the international orientation takes an important part of the studies. Many of the Master's students and doctoral candidates at the international graduate schools originally come from abroad. Therefore, all working groups have a strong international orientation (also through numerous international research cooperations, visits abroad, international guests). Through theses and internships in the various working groups, students are in constant exchange with international scientists.

Special features regarding the equipment

In addition to the modern lab equipment in the various pharmaceutical disciplines which is available to the students, the individual work groups use numerous measuring apparatus for current research projects. This includes, for example, NMR, LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, FTIR and VCD for analytical measurements, high-throughput assays for cellular tests or fermenters for biotechnological applications. With the bwForCluster a computer cluster is available for virtual screening. Modern calorimetric measuring procedures were currently being established within the pharmaceutical technology (e.g. ITC).

Special features regarding research activities

Research is one of the main pillars of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Freiburg. In addition to a large number of projects funded by the DFG (German Research Foundation), there are ongoing research association projects e.g. in the field of of cofactor-dependent enzymes (DFG ResearchGroup 1976), in the field of epigenetic drug discovery (SFB 992) or in the study of molecular membrane transport processes (DFG ResearchGroup 2202). A new additional professorship in bioanalytics has opened up further fields of research.

Support for founders

The University of Freiburg supports start-ups with numerous measures and promotes further education and teaching in the area of start-up-relevant qualifications. The start-up office provides students, doctoral candidates and post-docs with a team of experts who can offer competent advice at every stage of the start-up process. Information events of the start-up office take place regularly. The start-up officer of the department is in direct contact with the start-up office, informs about current funding programmes and is in direct contact with future founders.
