Special features regarding teaching

The Department of Biology already offers a very high level of practical relevance in the Bachelor's degree course in Biology and enables an early research orientation and individual options, which can be deepened in the Master's degree course. In addition, soft skills such as teamwork and presentation techniques are taught. The degree course is characterised by close relationships with assistant professors and intensive student supervision and guidance. The BioCampus has an attractive learning centre and thoroughly modern and excellently equipped practical laboratories.

Special features regarding the international orientation

With numerous cooperations in the context of international joint research projects, the department offers both doctoral candidates and visiting scientists, as well as students, an open, international and inspiring research environment. Within the scope of the degree programme, numerous modules, preferably in the Master's degree course, are optionally offered in English. A stay abroad is made much easier in all degree courses through the very flexible and individual crediting of modules.

Special features regarding research activities

Within the environment of the Technical University, the Department of Biology attaches particular importance to an interdisciplinary, engineering orientation in research and teaching. This has resulted in the research focus "Synthetic Biology", which strengthens the profile of the TU Darmstadt with the newly founded "Centre for Synthetic Biology". The focus "Radiation Response and Genome Stability" benefits from the proximity to the Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research "GSI". The intensive networking in the Rhine-Main area is reflected in several joint SFBs with the universities of Mainz and Frankfurt.
