Special features regarding teaching

The Biosciences are extremely practically oriented in Braunschweig. Far more than 50% of teaching consists of experimental work in various practicals. The individual optional required modules in the BA/MA and the MA specialisation modules are compiled by the students themselves depending on the subjects of interest. In addition to the traditional fields of Biology, it is also possible to specialise in Biology, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, System Biology and Mechanical Engineering. Especially important is the integration of assistant professors from non-university institutions (e.g. HZI, RKI, TI, JKI) in teaching.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Department of Biosciences in Braunschweig encourages a vigorous exchange with universities & research institutions abroad. Most students complete work placements lasting several weeks or semesters abroad in northern European countries, the Benelux countries, England, the USA, Australia or New Zealand. However, China and Japan are also popular. Bachelor's or Master's theses are also written in these countries with funding, and supervision from Braunschweig assistant professors. Good language skills that can be acquired in the extremely well-equipped Language Centre free of charge are essential.

Special features regarding research activities

The biosciences in Braunschweig are characterized by numerous close cooperations in research and teaching with non-university institutions in the regions. The Braunschweig region is the strongest research region in Europe, in which the TU Braunschweig occupies a key position. A large proportion of our students complete internships and/or theses with our non-university partners. With the BRICS, a joint research centre of the TU BS, the HZI and Leibniz Institute DSMZ has existed directly on campus since 2016.

Other special features

The Department of Biosciences in Braunschweig cultivates a particularly cooperative and close relationship between students and teaching staff. Students are viewed as equal partners and, in most cases, known by name to their colleagues throughout the entire degree programme. The assistant professors maintain an open-door policy. Deans and coordinators have direct and continuous contact with the department and student representatives. Potential problems are therefore identified at an early stage and eliminated in a timely fashion. Students like to identify with their university.
