Special features regarding teaching

Outstandingly high proportion of practical courses, problem-oriented and research-based learning on state-of-the-art equipment, wide range of excursions, variety of topics and methods, digital teaching formats/e-learning (learning platforms, blended learning, e-books), compact pre-course in chemistry/physics/mathematics, first-semester tutorials, buddy programme for international students. Students, exchange programmes, BioPlus area for additional and key qualifications, teacher training in the Professional School of Education and in the student laboratory, Bio(s) in Congress (congress organised by M.Sc. for B.Sc. students).

Special features regarding the international orientation

The RUB is a European University. ERASMUS, LabExchange, etc., for student exchange, high degree of transcontinental, international ties which make the many research visits and work placements abroad possible. Internationalisation area in the master's degree course. "Internationalisation at Home" is possible. Information events, individual counselling and financial support for stays abroad, numerous language courses at the Foreign Language Centre, English-language courses, International Student Service, Welcome Centre for visiting academics.

Insight into ongoing research projects from 1. Specialized semesters on topics such as Alzheimer's disease, protein research, protein diagnostics (research construction), nerve damage and regeneration, ataxia, microbial substrate conversion, biotechnology, biochemical networks in plants, antibiotic research, biological hydrogen production, biodiversity, plant-fungus interactions, heavy metal resistant plants, optogenetics, bioluminescence, phenotypic plasticity, biodiversity.

Other special features

The Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology cooperates in research and teaching with the other faculties of natural sciences, the Faculty of Medicine, the University Hospitals, the Faculty of Psychology, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology and the Botanical Garden of the Ruhr-Universität. In addition, there are cooperations within the University Alliance Ruhr with the universities of Duisburg-Essen and Dortmund as well as with Max Planck Institutes in the region. B.Sc./M.Sc. work is available in many of these areas.
