Special features regarding teaching

On-campus teaching: all computer science courses take place within a radius of 100 metres. Students learning from students: extensive use of student tutors in the Bachelor's degree. Frequent small group/team work in tutorials, project groups, and internships.

Special features regarding the equipment

Excellent computer facilities for students and staff; WiFi in all buildings/central rooms (internal/VPN, eduroam); several student computer rooms with technical support; other special labs in the individual Computer Science departments (e.g. Computer Graphics, Robotics/Autonomous Intelligent Systems, IT Security, Malware Analysis, laser & light lab). Competence Centre Machine Learning Rhine-Ruhr(ML2R) and Cluster of Excellence PhenoRob provide excellent subject-specific technical equipment for teaching and research.

Special features regarding research activities

Strong application focus, close links with the Fraunhofer IAIS and Fraunhofer FKIE (Institute directors are professors of Computer Science, additional joint professorships); also close contact to the Bonn-Aachen international Centre for Information Technology; Data Science, IT Security and Privacy; Robotics and Visual Computing shape practical Computer Science which is complemented by strong theory groups; close cooperations with the internationally outstanding Mathematics department in Bonn (Cluster of Excellence, Hausdorff Centre, Research Institute for Discrete Mathematics).

Support for founders

Annual entrepreneurship seminar at b-it together with the City of Bonn and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce; start-up consulting by the Department of Technology Transfer of the University of Bonn; four mentorships of computer science professors for spin-off projects.

Other special features

In particular, the institute supports students in their first and second semesters of the Bachelor's degree course with study support offered during the lecture period for four days per week. Here, the students receive help if they have any questions regarding content of the compulsory lectures in the Bachelor's degree course. In addition, intensive examination preparatory courses are offered before the examination dates. The learning support consists of four student tutors.
