Special features regarding teaching

We offer intensive support at the start of your degree: our four-week preliminary course refreshes your mathematical knowledge and introduces you to academic learning. Our extensive advisory network, the close support provided by students from higher semesters during the introductory phase of studies (helpdesk, study groups, tutorial) and the always open ear of the lecturers lead to a family atmosphere. We offer a scientific education at the highest level through the close integration of research and teaching as well as numerous possibilities for individual focal points.

Special features regarding the equipment

Practical courses with modern state-of-the-art equipment; student workshop; student workroom with multimedia equipment; IT seminar/exercise room with subject-specific software; faculty library with workstations; long-term loan of all necessary textbooks for the first four semesters; WiFi campus-wide; state-of-the-art laboratory equipment oriented to current research; access to national and international large-scale research facilities (CERN, etc.) and mainframe computers.

Special features regarding research activities

Unusual variety of research key areas: Astronomy/Astrophysics, Solid State Physics and Materials Sciences, Hadron Physics, Plasma Physics, Biophysics, Medical Informatics, Didactics of Physics, generally each with experimental and theoretical orientation. Our motto "From Matter to Materials" reflects the spectrum from basic research to application orientation. The faculty is strong in research, works interdisciplinary and is internationally networked. Close cooperations exist with the Jülich Research Centre, the DLR Cologne and the MPI for Iron Research Düsseldorf.

Support for founders

The Ruhr-University Bochum supports all students and employees in starting a business through the department "Transfer and Entrepreneurship". The novel transfer and start-up concept of the Ruhr-Universität under the label "Worldfactory" accompanies students on their way to founding a company. In addition to consulting services, free seminars are offered. In addition, the Gründer Campus Ruhr and rubitec GmbH are represented on the campus. The faculty regularly advises and informs its students about the offers.

Other special features

Close and constructive participation of the students in the optimisation of the degree courses. Currently, the study entry phase is being fundamentally revised. The aim is to provide even better support at the beginning of the degree course. In addition to promoting the independence of the students, the study programme focuses on independent and research-based learning and career orientation. Stays abroad are specifically promoted to prepare students for the necessary knowledge of English as a technical language. Finally, we would like to mention our outstanding student advisory services.
