Special features regarding teaching

The institute has a very broad range of courses in Pure and Applied Mathematics, Stochastics and Financial Mathematics. Especially in the Master's phase, academic studies and teaching are increasingly linked (e.g. participation of students in research seminars and those of the Berlin Mathematical School, which is supported by the HU, and which also contributes to internationalisation of the course at the HU). The teaching at the institute complements the course offerings of the TU and FU very well. Special features of the HU courses: Financial Mathematics and Statistics master's course.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

University of Durham, UK; Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, UK; Universite Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI), Frankreich; The University of Edinburgh, UK

Special features regarding the equipment

Four computer rooms with extensive equipment for mathematical software; several computer clusters.

Special features regarding research activities

The key research areas of the institute are characterised by inter-disciplinary work. Here, particular emphasis should be placed on the DFG (German Research Foundation) Research Centre MATHEON "Mathematics for key technologies: Modelling, Simulation and optimisation of real processes " and the Einstein Centre for Mathematics (ECMath). Research and the promotion of junior researchers are closely related to each other. We consider the qualification of young academics an important task, in particular in the BMS as well as during the participation in Collaborative Research Centres and graduate colleges.

Other special features

Participation in research projects (BMS, Matheon, Einstein Centre for Mathematics, Math+); school activities: Summer schools, Mathematics pupils' society, "Känguru-Wettbewerb" (Kangaroo Competition), Berliner Netzwerk mathematisch naturwissenschaftlich profilierter Schulen (Berlin Mathematical and Scientific Network of Distinguished Schools).
