Special features regarding teaching

The courses offered by the faculty are characterised by interdisciplinarity, the combination of theoretical knowledge and methodological skills as well as application orientation with a focus on research. Students learn from the very first semester that the social world can and must be analysed from different social science perspectives. Teaching research projects offer the opportunity to apply acquired knowledge and skills. Openness to the world, appreciation of cultural diversity are a matter of course, numerous partner universities offer the possibility of a semester abroad.

Support for founders

The Ruhr-Universität has set up a "Worldfactory" to promote entrepreneurial and start-up spirit during studies. Here, entrepreneurial ideas are developed together with students from other disciplines in interdisciplinary teams and constructively accompanied and advised by experts and scientists. Students are provided with rooms, technical equipment and specific teaching formats. The faculty supports the activities of the Worldfactory by integrating seminars on entrepreneurship into the curriculum.

Other special features

With the motto "human - cosmopolitan - high-performance", the Ruhr-Universität places the diversity of its members at the centre of its mission statement. The high proportion of students from non-academic families is a challenge that the faculty takes into account in its teaching (small groups, structured supervision). In the organisation of teaching at the Faculty of Social Sciences, special emphasis is placed on student participation. A "Day of Teaching" is held regularly to discuss current challenges at eye level.
