Special features regarding teaching

The University of Bremen has long pursued the concept of learning through research. The department's degree courses have many integrated mandatory projects, which are also and especially offered across courses. Students are specifically prepared for jobs in engineering. The diversity of the projects reflects the diversity of the research and occupational activities of engineers. The introductory phase is supported by open learning groups, which are closely accompanied and guided by tutors.

Special features regarding the international orientation

A high proportion of international professors and a large number of large research institutes (including Fraunhofer, Leibniz and DLR) support the international orientation of the training. Individual options for periods abroad based on existing partnerships. ‘speakING’ preparation programme for the admission of international prospective students to the Production Engineering degree course. English-language master's degree in "Space Engineering". Close cooperation with Bremen's space-related industry (Airbus, OHB, etc.).

Special features regarding the equipment

The Department, with its specialist areas and associated institutes, covers a very broad and varied spectrum from basic research to applied research. There are sometimes unique technical facilities available for this. Examples are ZARM's world-renowned drop tower, where experiments are carried out in weightlessness, and the MAPEX Equipment Center, where innovative materials are developed and characterised, e.g. for biomedical applications or for use in the aerospace industry.

Special features regarding research activities

The members of the Production Engineering department coordinate a large number of national and international collaborative research projects, in particular the Collaborative Research Centres 1232 "From coloured states to evolutionary construction materials", 747 "Micro-cold forming - processes, characterisation, optimisation", the SFB/Transregio 136 "Function-oriented manufacturing on the basis of characteristic process signatures", as well as the Research Training Groups 1620 "Models of gravity" and 1860 "Micro-, meso-, and macro-porous non-metallic materials: basics and application (MIMENIMA)".

Support for founders

Business start-ups and the transfer of innovative ideas are an important pillar of the department. Start-up support takes is provided by the dynamic university network "BRIDGE - Gründen aus Bremer Hochschulen" for example. The support services are continuously developed and adapted to the needs of company founders. It is aimed at students, graduates and scientific staff and currently consists of the modules "Courses for sensitisation/qualification", "Advice/support programmes" and the CAMPUSiDEEN competition.

Other special features

The Production Engineering department cooperates closely with many large engineering research institutes located on the campus of the University of Bremen (e.g. Fraunhofer, Leibniz, DLR). The organisational links to the department are structured such that the management of these institutes is often linked with the management of a university chair within the department For the students, this cooperation results in interesting topics for projects and theses, but also diverse employment opportunities in the research sector.
