Special features regarding teaching

The close link between university and practice as well as the strong interdisciplinary approach to teaching is not only evident in the structure and content of the course (e.g. integrated work placements and in-depth theory-practice reflection seminars,; interdisciplinary modules,; research-based learning and teaching), but also in a variety of practical and research-based collaborations between lecturers/the department and industry. Content is developed in a skills-oriented manner and various learning, advisory, cultural and media workshops are available.

Special features regarding the international orientation

As part of the international semester, at least 30 CP in English are offered in the BA Social Work and BA Education and Learning in Childhood degree courses every summer semester - the courses are aimed at incoming students as well as students in Hamburg. Since 2019, the MA Social Work has included excursions to and summer schools with the partner university California State University in Long Beach.

Special features regarding the equipment

In the counselling lab, students are given the opportunity to practise conversation sequences and counselling situations with video support. In addition, the university's classrooms have extensive multimedia equipment. This offer is supplemented by the online learning platform EMIL and the computer cluster for students. The Audiovisual Media Centre of the faculty offers comprehensive advice and software and hardware for loan. The library has access to various specialist literature databases. Diverse tools for online teaching are available

Special features regarding research activities

The Social Work research projects either deal with target groups or support/care structures. Current projects examine, for example, matters of professional rehabilitation of people with mental illness, inclusive youth work, qualification for working with refugees or conflicts in child and youth welfare/psychiatry. Professors and research assistants from the department also participate in the Competence Centre for Health and the Research and Transfer Centre for Social Participation.

Support for founders

Together with the "start-up service" (a central unit of the university), the department is active in the field of social entrepreneurship. Joint lectures, videos and workshops are created that support students in setting their initial start-up ideas in motion during their studies with professional expertise. In addition, practical examples of social enterprises, of which the Hanseatic city of Hamburg has plenty, can be discussed in the courses.

Other special features

In addition to the regular courses, there is an Anti-Discrimination Working Group as an alliance of students and teaching staff, which organises various events (conferences, lectures).
