Target group

Philosophy analyses the conditions and requirements of thought and recognition as well as the position of the person in the world. Amongst other things, Philosophy questions how ethical and moral standards can be set and defended and how human life can be shaped in a meaningful way.In the course of its thousand-year history, Philosophy has always had a changing relationship to other sciences. This resulted in the sub-areas of Philosophy, including Metaphysics and Ontology, Hermeneutics, Epistemology, Logic, Ethics, Aesthetics, Linguistic Philosophy, Philosophy of History or Philosophy of Law. These sub-areas can be found in the Master of Arts in Philosophy with both a historical specialisation as well as a systematic specialisation.

Annotation

If the Bachelor degree certificate is not available by the application deadline, but at least 135 credit points can be demonstrated: Submit a certificate of study and examinations and the average grade achieved so far. (This certificate must be issued by the relevant higher education, original or officially authenticated copy). After enrolment, the diploma must be submitted. If the degree was obtained abroad: officially authenticated copy of a certificate of recognition (responsible: Student Service - Admission International).

Admission requirements

Bachelor's degree with a standard period of study of at least 6 semesters at a university in Germany or abroad with a Philosophy/Ethics component of at least 60 credit points (CP) or an equivalent degree with an equivalent component of subject-specific pass/fail courses and graded courses. When choosing a specialisation in "Philosophy of Antiquity" or "Philosophy of the Middle Ages” in the Master’s final examination, students must demonstrate a basic knowledge of Ancient Greek by at least confirming successful participation in a course for beginners or sufficient language proficiency in Latin through at least 3 years of school education with at least the final grade "sufficient" by the semester before the registration for the MA final examination. The state Latinum (Latin proficiency certificate) is counted as five years of Latin tuition.
